Obstetrics Q & A

What is unique about obstetric care at River Place OB-GYN?

We are a boutique practice with big-league skill, experience, and technology. River Place OB/GYN was created to give expectant mothers the latest, safest, and highest quality in obstetric care while still providing an individualized compassionate approach. We pride ourselves on offering a supportive environment, where there’s always time to answer questions. In addition, everyone at River Place OB GYN recognizes that patients’ lives are busy and is committed to keeping appointments on schedule as best as possible.

What is your cesarean section rate for first-time moms?

For 2022, our practice has the lowest cesarean rate (called NTSV rate) at St Davids North Austin by a fair amount.  Our rate was 16%, far below the national average and hospital average.

Do you accept high-risk patients?

Yes. Both Dr. Thoppil and Dr. Shepherd are very comfortable managing high-risk pregnancies. Whether extra monitoring is required due to an underlying health condition or merely being one of the growing numbers of expectant moms who are over age 35, our doctors have the expertise to care for you and your baby. And to ensure the best delivery experience, we use St. David’s North Austin, which has a team of Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists that is available to co-manage pregnancies, if needed. They also have a top neonatal ICU team available.

How many prenatal appointments will I have and what do these entail?

During the first 28 weeks of pregnancy, most expectant mothers have one appointment every 4 weeks. At that point, visits to our office become biweekly. In the final stretch, appointments are every week. At each appointment, your weight and blood pressure are measured and your urine tested for protein, glucose, or infection. Patients aged 35 years of age or older at the time of delivery are offered genetic counseling and an amniocentesis and ultrasound. Each visit also entails a physical check up to monitor the health and development of you and your baby.

Where will I deliver my baby?

We deliver primarily at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center. It offers a full-service maternity ward equipped to enable us to handle any possible situation. They also have a top level 3 NICU. Please feel free to check out their website.
